Or am I just that bad at math?
In a late-last-season episode of Medium the oldest daughter, whose name escapes me at the moment, was taking the SATs (or a practice test, whatever), and a single math question appeared on screen. Being obsessive about fake books produced for TV shows, I captured an image of it:
Okay, am I crazy, or are none of those the correct answer?
It's a simple enough equations Father's age (F)/3 = Son's age (S). For the equation to be true S+15 must be equal to (F+15)/2. But as far as I can tell, that doesn't work for any of them.
A) If F=4, then S=1.3, so in fifteen years the totals would be F=19 and S=16.3
B) If F=8, then S=2.6, so in fifteen years the totals would be F=23 and S=17.6
C) If F=16, then S=5.3, so in fifteen years the totals would be F=31 and S=20.3
D) If F=32, then S=10.6, so in fifteen years the totals would be F=47 and S=25.6
E) If F=64, then S=21.3, so in fifteen years the totals would be F=79 and S=36.3
Now, to be fair, those last two were awfully close to half, but neither was actually there. So is this just utter gibberish someone threw together as a prop in five minutes, or have I forgotten how 'math' works?
Well, the first problem is that none of the ages given for the father are neatly divisible by three, but age is typically expressed as an integer, not a real number. Looks to me like the correct answer should be F=45.
