HOW TO RUIN YOUR OWN MOVIE: THE CLOVERFIELD EDITION

(The following was written paused 21 minutes into the movie “Cloverfield”)

I haven't seen the movie Cloverfield yet, but I already know how it's going to end. How do I know this? The filmmakers were nice enough to inform me in advance. As the film begins, two title cards come up. The first reads:

DOCUMENT #USGX-8810-B467
DIGITAL SD CARD
MULTIPLE SIGHTINGS OF CASE DESIGNATE
“CLOVERFIELD”

Then there's a second page, informing us that:

CAMERA RETRIEVED AT INCIDENT SITE “US-447”
AREA FORMERLY KNOWN AS “CENTRAL PARK”

So what can the savvy viewer glean from this information? Something happened in the city that wrecked a whole lot of it. This video contains footage that, on numerous occasions, caught sight of the thing that wrecked New York. Given that the camera was 'retrieved' rather than handed over, we can safely assume that whoever was shooting the footage is currently dead.

Within the first five minutes of the movie, we've met our entire cast of characters, and by twenty it's clear that a giant monster is attacking New York. Add those two facts together, and only one logical conclusion can come to the mind of the viewer – whatever other ways they try to escape are going to fail, and round about the - I'm guessing 80 minute mark, I didn't check the running time before popping in the DVD - whatever surviving main characters are left are going to try to escape via some sort of helicopter rescue set up in central park, where they'll all be killed by the monster.

I make this assumption based on two facts – one, the only logical thing to do when a monster is attacking is to try to escape, so they're no reason to go to the middle of the island unless someone is coming to save you, and the only way to save someone is by helicopter. Yes, technically they might get away and the camera could just get dropped, but somehow I doubt they'd make that movie. I know that some exciting things are probably going to happen over the next (60?) minutes, and hey, giant monster, nothing wrong with that, but the fact is, knowing full well going in that everyone is going to die makes it hard to care about Main Guy, Main Guy's ex-girlfriend, Brother, Brother's Girlfriend, Doofy Camera Guy, or Girl that Doofy Camera Guy Likes.

I just hope that nobody does anything too stupid in their attempts to escape.
